The 2024 NFL Draft is considered by many to be one of the most talented drafts in recent history. With this, one can be assured that the Indianapolis Colts will have several rookie candidates who will make an impact on day one. The Colts finished the 2024 NFL draft selecting nine players from all different positions. However, three players in particular have a realistic chance to be high-profile rookies in the league. These players also have the most upside to contribute early and even to be a starter on day one.

Rookies Who Will Make the Biggest Impact on the Colts

Laiatu Latu, DE

The Colts selected UCLA’s defensive end, Laiatu Latu with the fifteenth overall pick in the draft. As a winner of the Vince Lombardi Award, Latu is ready for the NFL on day one. In an interview with the media, Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley talked about edge rushers. He stated that with many rookies, there is a transition period in which they need to get up to NFL speed. However, regarding Latu, Bradley stated that he is “polished” and has a “head start” on his transition period.

According to Nick Bromberg of Yahoo! Sports, Latu has the second-best odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. He is behind fellow edge rusher Dallas Turner who was drafted 17th overall by the Minnesota Vikings. Personal defensive line coach Eddy McGilvera has worked with some of the best rushers in the league. He has worked with Aidan Hutchinson and Khalil Mack, to name a couple.  According to McGilvera, Latu has similar playmaking abilities as TJ Watt. Latu’s footwork and speed make him so explosive as an edge rusher. If he can stay healthy,  Latu is primed to make an impact as a rookie for the Colts.

Adonai Mitchell, WR

The second pick by the Indianapolis Colts was Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. He was considered as a first-round talent. Therefore, the Colts got themselves a steal and he is ready to make an impact as a rookie. When Mitchell was drafted, Colts wide receiver coach Reggie Wayne stated that the wide receiver room “just got better”. He also mentioned that getting Mitchell in the second round was a “steal”. Adding Mitchell’s vertical capabilities and high catch percentage, the Colts offense is primed for explosion. He will line up with playmakers like Josh Downs, Michael Pittman Jr., and Jonathan Taylor. If given the chance to make plays down the field, Mitchell will prove to be elite.

Anthony Gould, WR

Anthony Gould was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft but could prove to make an impact as a rookie for the Colts. Gould is a 5’8″ receiver who ran a 4.39 at the combine and is explosive on special teams. After last year’s return specialist, Isaiah McKenzie signed with the New York Giants, someone else needed to step up. Based on the pick, it is clear that the Colts will look to Gould to be that return specialist. He will also provide depth as a receiver. Gould was very productive on special teams in college. If his production can translate to the NFL, he can immediately impact the Colts as a rookie.
